Part 11 of the “Life with a Lion: All About the Leonberger” Series

As our journey through life with Leonbergers nears its end, it’s time to talk about the future of this magnificent breed. Whether you’re considering breeding, adopting, or simply becoming a passionate advocate, giving back to the Leonberger community is one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate everything they bring to our lives.

In this final post of the series, we’ll explore how to responsibly support the Leonberger legacy—ensuring that these gentle giants continue to thrive for generations to come.

🧬 Responsible Breeding – Quality Over Quantity

Breeding Leonbergers is a serious responsibility, not a casual undertaking. Ethical breeders prioritize health, temperament, and breed preservation—not profit.

If you're considering breeding:

✅ Must-haves:

  • Health testing of both parents, including:

    • Hip and elbow evaluations (OFA or FCI certified)

    • Cardiac screening

    • Eye exams (CERF)

    • DNA testing for Leonberger Polyneuropathy (LPN1 & LPN2)

  • Knowledge of pedigrees to avoid inbreeding or poor matches

  • Mentorship from an established, ethical breeder

  • Preparedness for lifetime support to puppy buyers

  • A plan to take back any dog you produce, for any reason

⚠️ Avoid breeding without complete health records. It puts the dogs and the breed at risk.

🏡 Choosing Adoption – Rescue Leonbergers Deserve Love, Too

Leonbergers occasionally end up in rescue situations—often through no fault of their own. If you have a heart for second chances, adopting or fostering a Leonberger can be life-changing for both of you.

Where to look:

  • Leonberger rescue organizations in your country or region

  • Breed-specific networks and clubs

  • Shelters with mixed or misidentified Leonbergers (they’re often mistaken for Newfoundlands or Pyrenean mixes)

Rescue Leos may:

  • Be older and calmer

  • Have special needs (mobility, anxiety)

  • Be wonderful companions with a little extra patience and love

❤️ Rescue is not “less than”—it’s another path to joy.

🌟 Ways to Give Back – Even Without Breeding or Adopting

You don’t have to breed or adopt to make a difference in the Leonberger world. Here are other

meaningful ways to get involved:

📣 Educate Others

  • Share facts about Leonberger care and needs

  • Correct misconceptions about giant breeds

  • Encourage responsible ownership

🐕 Volunteer

  • Help at Leonberger rescue events or transports

  • Offer temporary foster care

  • Organize local Leonberger meetups or fundraisers

💰 Donate or Sponsor

  • Contribute to medical care for rescue Leos

  • Support genetic research and health studies

  • Sponsor a senior or special-needs Leonberger

🎓 Mentor New Owners

  • Share your experience with first-time Leo families

  • Help others navigate grooming, training, and health challenges

🧡 A Lasting Legacy

To live with a Leonberger is to know a unique kind of loyalty—soft, steadfast, and larger than life. Whether you're raising a pup, supporting seniors, or advocating for rescue, you are now a part of the

Leonberger legacy.

Your love and efforts will ripple forward into the future of this breed, helping ensure that Leonbergers continue to bring calm strength, gentle presence, and lion-hearted companionship to people around the world.
